フォスターが２７歳のときに作った曲で、彼の代表作のひとつとなっています。
結婚後、妻のジェーンとふたりでケンタッキー州バーズタウンの父の従兄弟ジョン・ローワン判事の家を訪れたとき、
果てしなく広がる緑のケンタッキーに深い感銘を受けて曲想を得、その翌年、1853年に書き上げました。
ローワン判事の家は1922年以来、ケンタッキーの家として州政府によって保存されています。
オリジナルの歌詞は1851年に発刊されたハリエット・ビーチャー・ストウ夫人の 『アンクル・トムの小屋』 から書き起こしており、
家族と離れ、物のように売られていく黒人たちの悲しみを書き綴ったものですが、奴隷制度の描写を含んでいたため、
1986年に 「darkies（黒人）」 を 「people（人々）」 にするなど、歌詞の一節が州議会によって変更されました。
現在、アメリカ合衆国ケンタッキー州の州歌として愛唱されています。
