イエス・キリストの降誕を喜び祝う代表的なクリスマス・キャロル。
１８３６年、アメリカの宗教音楽家ロウェル・メイスンが、ヘンデルのオラトリオ 《メサイア》 の合唱部分の旋律を抜き出して
編曲したものといわれています。
賛美歌の父と呼ばれるイギリスのアイザック・ワッツが１７１９年にかいた 「ダビデの詩」 からとられた “Joy to the world”（たみみなよろこべ）や
イギリス人牧師フィリップ・ドットリッジが１７３５年に書いた “Hark, the glad sound!”（もろびとこぞりて）が広く歌われています。
光の主をついに迎えた、晴れやかな喜びに満ちており、日本でもクリスマス近くになるとよく耳にする、おなじみの曲です。
