スカボロー・フェア


ゆめみるよ　スカボロフェア　光り輝いて
花も木もふたりに　語りかけたのに

みんな遠い思い出　あの日　この胸に

イングランドの民謡である 「スカボロー・フェア」 は、一説によると、妖精と人間のやりとりで、
魔界の住人である “妖精騎士” が、旅人に無理難題（実現不可能な伝言）を問いかけ、
もし旅人がまともに返答したなら、魔界にさらっていこうとしています。
そのたくらみを見抜いた旅人は、「パセリ、セージ、ローズマリー、タイム」 と
魔よけ効果のある植物（ハーブ）の名を唱えて、うまく逃げおおせたということです。

　そこに住むあの人によろしく伝えて下さい
　彼女はかつて私の真実の恋人でした

　Without no seam nor fine needle work
　And then she'll be a true love of mine		 　彼女に私のために亜麻布のシャツを作らせてください

豆知識
パセリ、セージ、ローズマリー、タイム・・・和名は、オランダゼリ、サルビア、マンネンロウ、タチジャコウソウ。
縫い目も針仕事もなく・・・最初からシャツの形に織れ、ということ。
sycamore・・・直訳は　「アメリカスズカケノキ」　別名　「プラタナス」
花のカゴ・・・楓の花はカゴの形をしているらしいが、それはとてももろく、壊れやすい。
手を求める・・・求婚する。　この時代、女性から求婚するなんてとんでもないことだった。
